Meet Record Archive - Rochester, N.Y. (a CIMS store) 🏪

Richard “Dick” Storms, founded Record Archive in Rochester, New York, in 1975. It started as a booth selling records at a local flea market but quickly grew and moved into its first brick-and-mortar location in the basement of the old Village Green Bookstore before moving into its own space soon thereafter. In the shop's early years, the brand became well-known locally for its fun and funky TV ads starring Storms and the “dancing record man.”
In 1985, Alayna Alderman joined the Record Archive team as office manager. Her passion and entrepreneurial skills helped her quickly grow on the team, taking on roles such as vinyl buyer, event planner and store manager. In 1994, she joined forces with Storms and became vice president/co-owner. That same year, they also opened a second location. The first store closed in 2005, and the inventory from both stores was moved to a 13,000-square-foot warehouse—its current location—in 2008.
Record Archive carries one of the largest vinyl collections in the Finger Lakes Region of New York and is one of the largest record shops in the country. The store specializes in vintage vinyl and carries an extensive inventory of new and used records, CDs, cassettes, 8-tracks, DVDs, VHS tapes, movies, gifts, toys, novelty items, souvenirs, vintage clothing, vintage furniture, T-shirts, posters, audio equipment and more. Record Archive also buys, sells and repairs audiophile equipment.
In 2017, Record Archive expanded by opening Backstage Lounge, a 2,000-square-foot entertainment space with room for event rentals, live music, and a bar that serves beer and wine (making it the first record shop in the state to do so). The new space created an opportunity to bring in new customers. “It’s about breaking the ice,” Storms told the Democrat & Chronicle. “In retail, the most important thing is getting the people in.”
Alderman is a founding Coalition of Independent Music Stores (CIMS) member. Storms and Alderman were awarded the Music Biz Independent Spirit Award by the Music Business Association in 2019. Get a glimpse of Record Archive and meet Storm’s daughter Margaret, who works in the store, in episode 1 of Behind the Counter here.
