Meet UHF Records - Royal Oak, Mich. 🏪

UHF Records opened in 2010 in Royal Oak, Michigan, a northern suburb of Detroit, but its origin story goes back nearly a decade earlier. Tommy Dorr started Lost & Found Vintage in Royal Oak in 2003. Music lover and longtime vinyl collector Jeff Bubeck collaborated with Dorr to sell records inside his store. Seven years later, the duo had enough records to turn it into its own venture, and they partnered to open UHF Records next door to Lost & Found.

The massive vinyl inventory at UHF Records has been sourced from unique spots, including basements and storage lockers, the latter of which resulted in a surprise find that made national news back in 2012. Bubeck got access to an abandoned storage unit with more than 7,000 records and a box with tapes labeled "Jay Dee Beats," lyric books and mail addressed to "James Yancey," which he came to find out was J Dilla, the late legendary hip-hop producer and former member of Slum Village.

J Dilla passed away in 2006 at the age of 32 from complications from lupus. Stones Throw Records, who represented J Dilla early in his career, contacted Bubeck to tell him they owned the rights to the materials. Bubeck wasn't sure about that and started looking for ways to return the property to J Dilla's mother. A proud member of AIMS (the Alliance of Independent Media Stores), UHF Records is known for its robust and organized vinyl inventory, including original compositions, new releases, rare finds, and original pressings across a variety of genres like pop, punk, alternative rock, classic rock, heavy metal, soul, R&B, blues, and more. The store also carries CDs, cassettes, books, magazines, DVDs, VHS tapes, shirts, and posters. They often sell tickets to shows at local venues and host live music and other music events in-store.
