From his first album purchase as a child to opening Modern Sounds Vinyl & Music in 2019, Derek's journey has been fueled by a deep-seated love for music. "Opening this store was a dream come true," he says, reflecting on the path that led him to create a haven for vinyl lovers in Boise. Derek's passion extends beyond mere collection, focusing on the joy of sharing music with others and the personal connections it fosters. His laid-back, welcoming approach has turned Modern Sounds into a reflection of his vision for a space where every visitor discovers something that strikes a chord. For many music lovers in Boise, Modern Sounds has filled a common desire for a privately owned record store that focused on discovery and community rather than a generic big box retail experience. As one customer, Barton, puts it - "This is the record store for people that love records. This is the record store for the grizzled crate digger as well as the acolyte beginning the great journey. Music is worshipped at Modern Sounds."In addition to the store, Derek's unique holiday season pop-up shops downtown have allowed residents and tourists alike to find the perfect gifts in not only vinyl but also turntables and other music related items.
