Broadtime Bi-Weekly News & Assets 4-7-17 RSD, Mobile app news & More

Happy Mad March - Crazy April,

We are going to "attempt" something new here at Broadtime and see if we can publish a bi-weekly update to our customers.

Please bear with us as we adjust to a regular update note. There are many software programming changes and updates that we have been working on. These include our Record Store app, our listening stations and our websites.

Additionally, each week we work very hard to create and setup the upcoming weeks charts, news, and value added promotions. We also get assets from the labels for videos, full length samples and banners. Increasingly, there has been interest in promoting titles in advance of street date in a preorder fashion for customers. We did some work on this with Ryan Adams and others.

So, we hope to send this note in an effort to let you know when we publish the charts and what assets and sales tools are available to you. Our note may alert you that things are setup and that you may now edit them to suit your own store.

Please let me know email address of the staff members that you would like to receive these notes to assist with any setup.

Thanks for being our customer.

Jon, Chris & Team

Record Store Day setup

As we do every year, we have taken ALL of the "official" RSD releases that are setup on the main RSD Site and created those titles in your website and listening station system. They are "protected" from being for sale as a preorder and will be released after Record Store Day so that you may represent left over inventory.

In order for your customers to browse the titles on your own site and station, we have created a GENRE for RSD 2017 on your sites and stations (and apps). We have featured this genre on your tuneportals website and/or BPM listening station. You may edit the placement of the genre.

It will be the same ID on your site:  http://[yoursitename]/Genre/694747

NEW RELEASE ROUND-UP 04-07-17 (courtesy Music Millennium)

Pure ComedyFather John Misty's third album, is a complex, often-sardonic, and, equally often, touching meditation on the confounding folly of modern humanity. Father John Misty is the brainchild of singer-songwriter Josh Tillman. Tillman has released two widely acclaimed albums – Fear Fun (2012) and I Love You, Honeybear (2015) – and the recent “Real Love Baby” single as Father John Misty, and recently contributed to songs by Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, and Kid Cudi. While we could say a lot about Pure Comedy – including that it is a bold, important album in the tradition of American songwriting greats like Harry Nilsson, Randy Newman, and Leonard Cohen – we think it’s best to let its creator describe it himself. Take it away, Mr. Tillman: Pure Comedy is the story of a species born with a half-formed brain. The species’ only hope for survival, finding itself on a cruel, unpredictable rock surrounded by other species who seem far more adept at this whole thing (and to whom they are delicious), is the reliance on other, slightly older, half-formed brains. This reliance takes on a few different names as their story unfolds, like “love,” “culture,” “family,” etc. Over time, and as their brains prove to be remarkably good at inventing meaning where there is none, the species becomes the purveyor of increasingly bizarre and sophisticated ironies. These ironies are designed to help cope with the species’ loathsome vulnerability and to try and reconcile how disproportionate their imagination is to the monotony of their existence. Something like that. Pure Comedy was recorded in 2016 at the legendary United Studios (Frank Sinatra, Ray Charles, Beck) in Hollywood, CA. It was produced by Father John Misty and Jonathan Wilson, with engineering by Misty’s longtime sound-person Trevor Spencer and orchestral arrangements by renowned composer/double-bassist Gavin Bryars (known for extensive solo work, and work with Brian Eno, Tom Waits, Derek Bailey).

THE NEW PORNOGRAPHERS - Whiteout Conditions - Concord Records
'Cohesive.' It's a word New Pornographers founder A.C. Newman still sounds a little bit surprised to say as he describing the band's seventh album, Whiteout Conditions. It's a quality that you wouldn't necessarily intuitively associate with a so-called supergroup that, by its very collective nature, seems bound to have a good deal of stylistic variance built into the formula (or lack of it). Can an outfit built on the appeal of multiple frontmen and frontwomen develop a signature sound after all? Maybe, and maybe better late than never.

 - Capitol
La DivineCold War Kids most expansive and ambitious effort so far, pays tribute to Los Angeles in all its strange glory, embodying the Long Beach-bred band s endless fascination with their adopted hometown. In many ways, LA is the least divine city, the most hedonistic and irreverent and disconnected from history, says Willett. LA's so massive, I feel like I'm always finding something new in it, adds bassist Matt Maust. It's an incredibly weird place, and I'm happy to have made an album that totally honors that weirdness.

THE CHAINSMOKERS - Memories...Do Not Open - Sony
Memories...Do Not Open is the debut full-length album from Grammy Award winning artist/producer duo The Chainsmokers. Comprised of Alex Pall and Drew Taggart, The Chainsmokers have evolved into a dominating musical force with a diverse repertoire of songs that have led them to become today's hottest young artist/producer duo. With a signature sound that deftly reaches across indie, progressive and pop realms, their original tracks and remixes have topped the charts throughout the world.

ANDREW COMBS - Canyons Of My Mind - New West Records
Canyons Of My Mind is a collection of songs, all put together, that embodies the idea of a young man growing older. The album consists of the customary songs about lost love and travel, but also hits on more mature issues, such as environmental awareness, spirituality, mental illness, and political exploitation. Taking on a more introspective and controlling role in the writing and recording process, I dug deep inside my own heart and mind to create what I think is a good illustration of a man becoming more comfortable in his own skin. -Andrew Combs (December 2016)

FUTURE ISLANDS - The Far Field - 4AD
The Far Field refines and builds on the breakthroughs of the Baltimore-based trio’s 2014 album Singles, bursting with undeniable hooks and disarmingly honest lyrics written by Samuel T. Herring (vocals, lyrics), William Cashion (bass, guitars) and Gerrit Whelmers (keyboards, programming). After the success of Singles and the hundreds of Future Islands shows played in that period, the band began writing new material on the coast of North Carolina, and continued throughout the year in Baltimore before road-testing these songs at a series of secret shows under fake names. Later that year, they traveled to Los Angeles to record with Grammy Award-winning producer John Congleton at the legendary Sunset Sound, where everyone from The Beach Boys to Prince have laid down masterpieces. With string and horn arrangements by Patrick McMinn, The Far Field is the first Future Islands record to feature live drums by Michael Lowry, who joined the band prior to their sensational performance of “Seasons (Waiting On You)” on David Letterman’s late night TV show. Blondie’s Debbie Harry also makes a guest appearance, in a duet with Herring on penultimate track “Shadows.” Across The Far Field’s twelve chest-pounding love songs and odes to the road, Future Islands brilliantly expresses the band’s central themes they’ve been exploring for the last decade: that there is power in emotional vulnerability, that one can find a way to laugh and cry in the same breath – and be stronger for it. “This is the kind of band that makes you wish other bands tried harder.” - Pitchfork “An absolute and unqualified triumph” -Stereogum “Mournful, triumphant, heroic” -Complex

Broadtime YEAR OF THE APPS  - Now available in the Google Play ANDROID store (download Plan9)

It's no secret that we have been working hard to create a branded customer experience for our stores in the world of phone apps. While our listening station is delivered in app form, when it comes to creating the ideal app and relationship with your customers there are lot of things to do and build. We have been working on the concept for over year now and we are very close to wide scale roll out  (starting with existing customers).

There are several really valuable things that an app can do for your store and your customers.

Let's explore them together:

1. BAR CODE SCANNING. Customers get the experience of scanning any barcode and preview both in your store and where ever they are. This keeps them branded to you for both that record look up and for purchasing.

2. WELCOME TO THE STORE. Customers get a welcome PUSH message when they come into your store where you may offer coupons, or event or general information

3. YOUR STORE MARKETING. Like the listening station, they take the experience of your marketing campaigns, your featured titles, news, value-adds, and new releases all delivered to their phone and branded back to YOUR store for that information. The app will also enable the native watching of VIDEOS.

4. PUSH MESSAGING. You are able to blast out a push message to all users about significant things that are happening at your store such as an IN-STORE or SPECIAL SALE, or even an INDIE EXCLUSIVE. Eventually, we hope to work with you to segment your users, so that you can target specific sets of customers (i.e. Jazz Reissue fans, Artists your customers follow, etc.)

5. MOBILE COMMERCE. It's true that mobile responsive websites are critical and necessary for your customers, though industry research suggest that the most powerful phone commerce is directly from a store app. Our first iteration will have a wishlist function for digital downloads (that they retrieve from your website) and then shortly after that we will add checkout for physical fulfillment, all the way through to AEC just like our sites. M-Commerce is now greater than 30% of e-commerce and growing rapidly.

6. CUSTOMER LOYALTY. Just like an email newsletter, every customer that you convince to download your app, primarily for the bar code lookup function, becomes a new person that you may tastefully reach out to regarding sales, events and store programs. With each download you create a more loyal customer that is much more likely to shop with you.

Our ANDROID version of our BPM STORE APP is now in beta testing LIVE and we expect to be widely rolling it out to stores before Record Store Day. PLEASE LET US KNOW OF YOUR INTEREST so that we may prioritize customer delivery. You must at least have a listening station to get started and we are forming a queue for the next stores. We can still get you live before Record Store Day!

In the meantime, PLEASE DOWNLOAD and play with the PLAN 9 App, our first one.

So at Broadtime we keep looking for ways to improve and provide even more effective tools for retailers to engage with their customers. Some of those improvements include a new freestanding version of our station AND a brand new headphone clip. The clip can mount to the new stand or to our existing wall/desk mount fixtures (which are super flexible). It's a VESA standard so it works in all configurations.

We will begin including the headphone attachment on all new units. We will offer existing customers the ability to purchase them.

Here are some pictures:

Discounted Additional Units campaign

BPM Listening Station

Startup - minus additional $100

Monthly -  minus additional $25

We know from talking with our customers (you) that some stores would love to have more BPM Listening Stations to accommodate customer demand and increase coverage. While we already discount additional units normally, between now and Record Store Day we are going to offer an additional $100 off startup costs and $50 (extra $25) off the monthly fee add-on units.

This is an aggressive offer and only good between now and Record Store Day, please take advantage of it before the big day. Reach out for details.
