T-Bones Records & Cafe - Hattiesburg, MS

Celebrating its 20th anniversary under current management this year, T-Bone’s Records & Café has been a gathering place for the Hattiesburg, Mississippi community since 1999.

As any indie retail business can attest, much has changed over the past 20 years, but T-Bones owner Harry Crumpler III and his family have worked tirelessly to maintain the consistency and quality of its offerings. A member of CIMS (Coalition of Independent Music Stores), T-Bones aims to offer the same level of product availability and knowledge that customers may find in larger cities while staying true to its small-town roots in being on a first-name basis with most of the customers.

“Our location in a college city in South Mississippi and a renowned retirement community allows our employees to serve a wide swath of people,” says Crumpler. “As the industry has altered its course, T-Bones has done so as well - working to use our online resources for promotion, audience building, and even sales.”

In addition to LPs, CDs, and books, T-Bones also serves up coffee, sandwiches, house-made desserts and even its own brand of Cold-Brewed Coffee made in-house daily. T-Bones’ café and record store are bound together and you’ll often find hungry customers flipping through vinyl while waiting for their food.

NTX Vinyl - DFW Metroplex

NTX Vinyl - DFW

G.I. Sanders founded NTX (North Texas) Vinyl three years ago as an outpost inside a suburban Dallas antique mall. Initially, NTX Vinyl's offers were "An extension of me and my collecting," Sanders recently told The Sound of Safe & Sound Texas. A year into running NTX vinyl, the pandemic hit and while that presented the same challenge to Sanders that all stores faced, he saw it as an opportunity to expand into online sales.

Shifting to online sales "was a game-changer and an eye-opener," said Sanders. "Retail shut down and I remember thinking 'maybe that's it.' My last-ditch effort was to double-down on doing online stuff and that's really what set fire to the whole thing because that expanded my audience so much and at the same time you had all these people stuck at home, looking for things to do and records became a thing again in a lot of people's eyes.

"The demand has skyrocketed since then and isn't stopping at all."

As in-person commerce began returning, Sanders piggybacked off his success selling online to continue the growth of NTX Vinyl's presence in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. NTX now boasts three locations around the DFW Metroplex - Highland Village, Frisco and North Richland Hills.

As odd as it may sound, the pandemic may have helped NXT's business, as it forced Sanders to think innovatively about selling records online.

"The exponential growth for the brand of NTX Vinyl, I can't understate how important that is (doubling-down with a digital strategy and online presence) to the story of what's got me to where I am. If retail hadn't shut down, I don't know how long it would have taken me to build that online presence."

Records with Merritt - Kansas City

Marion Merritt has spent nearly 30 years in the music business. After spending 18 years managing the music department at one of Kansas City's Barnes & Noble locations, she struck out on her own in 2014, opening Records with Merritt in KC's vibrant Midtown-Westport neighborhood.

While she values her experience working for a larger company, saying she "learned so much in that environment," Marion relishes every moment of running her own indie music store. Marion curates the offerings at Records with Merritt, which she calls a store for the Vinylist.

Records with Merritt specializes in new vinyl across a multitude of genres, including R
ock, Pop, R& B, Indie, Classical, Jazz, Blues, Rap/Hip Hop, Electronica, Dance, Soundtracks and World Music.

Marion is also proud to carry LPs, CDs and cassettes of local Kansas City artists.

A women/minority-owned business, Records with Meritt also strives to serve as a people-friendly, non-judgmental environment for the Kansas City music community.

Tunes - Voorhees, NJ

Tunes - Voorhees, NJ

Located in Voorhees, about 30 miles outside downtown Philadelphia, Tunes has been serving the South Jersey area since 1989 and was once part of the same network of stores as Tunes Hoboken, a CIMS member.

Despite having 30 years under its belt, the COVID-19 pandemic impacted business at Tunes, as it did for many independent retailers around the world. As the pandemic wore on, Tunes' owner made the difficult decision to close the store.

That's when the store's employees decided to step in, not wanting to see a shop that has meant so much to the community for three decades go away. The employees took over the store and continue to keep Tunes alive, offering an array of new and used vinyl.

Tunes also hosts shows to support the local scene and its new employee-owners hope to keep Tunes' status as a staple of the South Jersey music for years to come.

Sound and Vision Vinyl - Salt Lake City

Music has been in Michael Maccarrone's life for as long as he can remember. A native of Long Island, Michael began collecting Beatles records at the age of 12. Two years later, Michael discovered a record store in New York that changed his life by introducing him to acts like David Bowie and the New York Dolls.

Today, Michael is hoping to similarly impact future generations of music fans through his shop, Sound & Vision Vinyl, which Michael and partner Pam Lancaster opened in 2015. The two met at a New York punk club called Legz in the early 80s and reconnected when life took both to Utah. Sound & Vision offers
the latest releases on vinyl and CD as well as rare collectible and memorabilia, t-shirt's, vintage promo displays and more.

This isn't Michael's first foray into running a record store, as he managed nearly a dozen in the New York metro area between 1978 and 2010. Before jumping into the indie record store business, Pam was head of MTV's Fashion and Makeup Department in the 1980s.

Record Exchange - Silver Spring, MD 🏪

Record Exchange Silver Spring

Located in downtown Silver Spring, Maryland - just outside Washington, DC - The Record Exchange has been serving the area for nearly 25 years. Three years ago, store employees Sheila Hunt and Brian France took over the store as new owners, continuing a well-known legacy for the DMV music community.

When taking over the store, Sheila understood the importance a record store has beyond just a place to buy music. "The record store is not just about buying for a lot of our customers, it’s kind of their touchstone for the week. It’s their relaxation for the week,” she told Capital News Service.

Throughout the pandemic, Sheila, Brian and team conducted virtual "flip-throughs" on the store's Facebook and Instagram pages as a way to stay connected with their customers and show them what was new, in-store while visiting the shop in-person was impossible.

The Record Exchange carries a wide variety of new and used vinyl, CDs, DVDs, BluRays, video games, gaming systems, patches, stickers, posters, t-shirts and more.

The Head - Vinyl Records

Many folks wouldn't dream of completely changing their business model in the heart of a pandemic, but that's exactly what Rik Parks did when he opened The Head - Vinyl Records in October 2020.

Pre-pandemic, Parks operated as The Maryland Institute of Music. While they still offer music instruction on everything from guitar, vocals and piano to drums, DJing and performance, COVID forced Parks to get nimble.

"We are a music school first and foremost," said Parks. "When COVID hit, we lost almost all of our students. Instead of closing, we decided to sell records and see if it would help. It did!"

What started with around 100 used vinyl has grown to a full offering of nearly 5,000 new and used records that customers are willing to drive from up to four hours away to peruse.

"We also offer vinyl de-warping and cleaning services using an obi record flattener and ultrasonic cleaner. We have a very unique five-step process that we invented and have become known for."

Clock Tower Records

Clock Tower Records

Clocktower Records is located in the heart of scenic Grass Valley, California, about an hour north of Sacramento. Serving the area's vinyl needs since 2011, Clocktower was purchased by Jonny Moser last year. Jonny says he was at a crossroads trying to figure out his next chapter would include when he heard his favorite local record store was for sale.

"I kind of had an epiphany that this is what I'm supposed to do with my life," said Jonny. "Not only was the best (record) store in town, but they had a deep selection of cool prog," a genre he grew to love as a kid through Genesis albums like Trespass and Foxtrot.

"You know how it goes," says Jonny. "You find yourself in the gatefold of some record and the next thing you know, you're off and running."

Since purchasing Clocktower, Jonny has been blown away by the support of Grass Valley residents. "The community here is awesome," he says. "That's what it's all about, hacking with people about music, learning about what people are into and exploring. There are so many great people here who have been very supportive, especially in the wake of COVID."

In addition to fostering local relationships, Jonny quickly recognized the importance of building out a strong digital presence and online store.

"He (the previous owner) had a discogs site for a long time," says Johnny. "(But I knew) this is something (e-commerce) that we want to focus on and expand. We need to do whatever we can to get records into people's hands from small businesses."

The Sub Pop Airport Store (Seattle, WA)

The Sub Pop Airport Store (Seattle, WA)

Sub Pop SeaTacSub Pop is a record label founded in 1986 by Bruce Pavitt and Jonathan Poneman in Seattle, Washington.
Sub Pop achieved fame in the late 1980s for first signing Nirvana, Soundgarden, Mudhoney and many other bands from the Seattle music scene. They are often credited with taking the first steps toward popularizing grunge music, and have continued to achieve critical and commercial success in the new millennium, with bands such as Fleet Foxes, Foals, Beach House, The Postal Service, Flight of the Conchords, No Age, Wolf Parade and The Shins on their roster.

Sub Pop launches new retail concept store in Seattle Tacoma Airport (story here)

Sub Pop’s long-standing motto, “Spanning the Globe for Profit”, became more true than ever before this May as they opened the doors to a first-of-its-kind retail space in the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. The Sub Pop Airport Store (working-title-turned-seemingly-actual-title) is a mix of the classic Sub Pop Mega Mart and a Pacific Northwest-centric gift shop. Sub Pop collaborated with designers, artists, and companies who also call the Pacific Northwest home and created a vast array of brand new Sub Pop and PNW-related wares currently available exclusively (for now) at the Sub Pop Airport Store.

Broadtime was honored when approached by Sub Pop to create an instore listening experience to match the whole ethos of their iconic brand and store.  We knew that Sub Pop's customers would be looking for an exciting, fun way to discover and further explore the fantastic selection of media at the store. Broadtime BPM stations provide the perfect platform to deliver that experience along with Sub Pop's marketing message. It has been an incredible opportunity to be part of this thrilling venture and we are proud that our BPM stations are now part of a new Seattle Landmark.

Music Millennium (Portland)

Music Millennium (Portland)

It was The Ides of March, March 15th of 1969, when Don MacLeod, his wife Loreen and brother in law Dan Lissy first opened an 800 square foot record store on the corner of 32nd & East Burnside. Specializing in mostly underground music not found in the department stores, drugstores or the couple of record stores which existed at the time, Music Millennium filled a niche for the Portland music community.

Titles by Fairport Convention, Frank Zappa, John Fahey, The Fugs and Holy Modal Rounders were stocked in the small store along with the sounds heard on the then three month old FM station, KINK- The Underground Link.

It's over 40 years later and Music Millennium is the oldest record store in existence in the Pacific Northwest. Throughout their history, they have stocked the ever-evolving gamut of formats including LP, 45, reel-to-reel, 8-track, cassette, DAT, compact disc, mini-disc, DCC and CD-ROM.

As people who know and love music, Music Millennium has hosted an array of in-store performances and autograph appearances over the years, including the likes of Richard Thompson, Luscious Jackson, Loreena McKennitt, Maureen McCormick (aka "Marcia Brady"), Blue Rodeo, Shonen Knife, Matthew Sweet, Soundgarden, Mike Watt, Don Walser, Sheryl Crow, Randy Newman, Everclear, Jewel, Little Feat, Susannah Hoffs and Cheap Trick to name a few.
